About our work

To make sure we continue to provide our customers with a first-class supply of drinking water every time you open the tap, we’re investing over £8 million to install a new service reservoir on the land adjacent to the existing service reservoir.

This will add further water storage and help reduce the chance of loss of supply in Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding areas.

The work will start during the Spring and, as long as everything goes to plan, will be completed during Autumn 2022. We will be writing to nearby customers closer to the time to let them know what they can expect.

The existing Pengarnddu Service Reservoir is located in the village of Pengarnddu in Merthyr Tydfil. It can be found next to Pengarnddu Industrial Estate, just off the A465, and currently serves more than 10,000 customers with a fresh supply of drinking water.

The new service reservoir will be constructed within Welsh Water land, located to the west the existing service reservoir, and will involve:

  • Constructing a partially buried service reservoir of 61m x 50m within the landscape.
  • New pipework to connect the new reservoir into the existing water supply network.
  • Building a one-storey valve house to provide operational access to supply pipework and valves.
  • Creating footpaths to provide operational access to the new reservoir and surrounding chambers.
  • Extending the site access track.
  • Replacing part of the existing site boundary with new, secure fencing.
  • Constructing a new control centre located inside a kiosk, adjacent to the existing reservoir.
  • Reinstating the land around the new reservoir to mirror the grassland of the existing site.

Our site compound will be located on a temporary area of land next to our working area. Once the construction has been completed, this area of land will be reinstated and returned.

While we carry out this work, nearby public footpaths will remain open. However, you may notice that some areas will be sectioned off with barriers. These barriers are in place for your safety, and we kindly ask that you do not enter any area that is sectioned off.

There should be no impact on your water supply or wastewater services while we carry out this work.

Traffic management

We’ll be working with Mott MacDonald Bentley and their subcontractors to help us get the work done, so you may notice their vehicles in the area. They will be accessing the site via Pengarnddu Industrial Estate, sharing the access road to the nearby Asda.

Working hours

We’ll be working Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm. However, there may be times they will need to work outside these hours to get the work done quickly.
