Smart Meter project in Abergele - frequently asked questions
We are installing new meters and replacing older meters with newer technology in Abergele.
Enabling us to find and fix leaks quicker which will help us improve our network for future generations.
We’ve already started preparing and plan to start installing meters from October 2024.
We will install the meter outside your home (on your external stoptap) where we can. If this is not possible we will be in touch to discuss.
Not usually, but we’ll let you know if we need to arrange an appointment with you.
It normally takes a few minutes to install a meter but in some cases it can take longer. We’ll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum.
We will need to turn your water supply off for a few minutes while we install the meter. Usually 10-15mins, and we will knock the door before to let you know.
We will carry out the work with as little disruption as possible. Sometimes we may need traffic management to ensure safety.

Our contractor called IES (Intregral Energy Solutions). They will have a Welsh Water ID card.

Collecting surface water from a roof into a water butt does not qualify for a reduction as this isn’t a permanent fixture.
Yes, there is no charge for the meter.
We expect that we will need to install a new stop tap chamber to fit our meter on one in 5 properties. Our intention is to hand dig each of the holes for new so we won't use a mini-digger.
No, in fact you could save you money if being on the meter is cheaper for you!
Not regarding the installation, but do reach out to us at abergele@dwrcymru.com if you have a specific concern. You won't be billed on the meter if you don’t want to, so you can stay on your unmeasured charge. You will only switch if you think it benefits you.
The new meters can be read remotely and help us to find and fix leaks quicker which will help us improve our network for future generations.
No. We don't remove meters, customers who have previously switch to a meter can revert to their unmeasured charge within 2 years. The meter will remain in the ground to help us detect leaks.
As part of the project, we will attempt to split the supply and provide you with your own brand new connection but that will be after a survey. We'll be in touch if we think this applies to you.
The battery contained in the meter will last 10 to 15 years.
If we can’t fit the meter externally, we will discuss with you about fitting the meter internally by one of our plumbers.

Yes, you stay on the social tariff and we will use the meter to help detect for leaks.
Yes, meters are calibrated international standards ensuring they meet accuracy requirements.

Yes, you can switch back to unmeasured charges up to 2 years after switching to metered billing.
Yes, you can submit a meter reading every 6 months via your MyAccount, but we will also be able to remotely take meter readings, but if there are any issues we will be in touch.
Yes, our meters don’t share your information. They just send us your data usage securely so you receive accurate bills.
No, the meter is battery powered and a Welsh Water asset so will not use any of your home energy supply.
We’ll be in the area and you can always get updates via our website at dwrcymru.com/abergele
We'll collect information on the location of your external stop tap, and regular up-to-date meter readings. If we notice a significant change that could be a leak, we may be in contact to ask if it is expected or not.
You won’t have monitor in your house but the readings will be sent to us automatically.
No, the meter only records water use and does not restrict. You can use your readings to help reduce your water use and help save the natural resource.
Yes, we will backdate the charges to the last meter reading.
No, it should not but if you have an issue with your water pressure then let us know and we will look into it. You can let us know by clicking here.
No, you will not have a device in your home like you do with your gas and electric.
Yes, you can contact us to update your account and base your charges on your water use recorded through the new meter.
