Mike clocks up the miles for charity!

A Welsh Water worker who decided to use lockdown as an opportunity to challenge himself to get fitter as well raise money for charity has clocked up 100 miles running around his hometown.

Mike Taylor, who works for Welsh Water’s contractor partner Morgan Sindall Infrastructure on its major wastewater investment project in the Caia Park area of Wrexham, took on the challenge of running 100 miles in February to raise money for Bone Cancer Research Trust, a charity close to his heart.

Mike said, “I’m keen to stay active and keep myself busy, so I felt taking on this challenge to run 100 miles would allow me to make a difference and raise awareness and funds to a charity which is close to my heart.”

Mike is no stranger to clocking up the miles. In October, Mike did a virtual walk from South Wales to North and back again as part of a challenge with his colleagues. Having walked 320 miles in December, Mike wanted to set himself another goal during February to help him stay active and get some fresh air, but he admits it was quite challenging at times.

Mike added, “We’ve had some really cold and rainy days in February which made it hard to drag myself out for a run some nights but knowing that I was running for charity and that people had sponsored me motivated me to go running come rain, hale and even snow! I would like to thank everyone who’s supported and sponsored me and helped me raise £620 for Bone Cancer Research Trust. It really does mean a lot to me.”

Sean O’Rourke, Welsh Water Project Manager said, “Mike is an inspiration to the rest of the team who works on our scheme in Caia Park. He is always keen to challenge himself and it’s great he has raised so much money for charity. I’m sure he has a few more challenges up his sleeve for the rest of the year, but I think he deserves a well earnt rest for now – congratulations Mike!”

Day to day, Mike is busy working on a £2.3 million project to upgrade the wastewater network to help tackle flooding in the Caia Park, Wrexham. The work by not-for-profit water company, Welsh Water started in July last year and will be finished in early April. For more information on the work, please visit In Your Area
