Welsh Water Staff Join Virtual Fun for Children in Need

26 November 2021

Welsh Water, the only not-for-profit utility company in England and Wales, has again risen to the challenge of bringing employees together virtually to raise money for Children in Need.

The company opted to do online-only events to keep everyone safe during COVID-19. Staff across the company came together online and took part in four different fundraising events – including a Children in Need auction hosted by auctioneer Charlie Ross and staff pet pageant.

In total, Welsh Water colleagues raised £1,622 exceeding the £1,000 target for Children in Need and to celebrate the fundraising efforts, the company matched this by donating the same amount taking total funds raised to £3,244.

Fundraising is part of the company’s wider commitment to supporting charities and community projects through its community fund. The company has partnered with WaterAid since 2008 and during that time has raised over £1 million for the charity, helping provide access to clean water, toilets and good hygiene. In addition, through its community fund, since April this year over £34,450 has been awarded to projects that benefit local communities within Welsh Waters’ operating areas in Wales and parts of Herefordshire.

Alun Shurmer, Director of Customer Strategy and Engagement at Welsh Water said:

"We have faced a challenging year in responding to COVID-19, but Children in Need has been a welcome opportunity to bring everyone together through these virtual events and have some fun while raising money. It’s fantastic that we’ve raised such a significant amount of money through these virtual events which will go towards such a great cause."

Welsh Water is a ‘not-for-profit company’ which has been owned by Glas Cymru since 2001. Welsh Water does not have shareholders, and any financial surpluses are reinvested in the business for the benefit of customers.
