Alun and Chwiler Living Landscapes

The area surrounding the upper Afon Alun (River Alyn) and Afon Chwiler (River Wheeler) has, for many years, been recognised as a biodiversity hotspot, and was therefore selected for the development of a ‘Living Landscape’ project.

The area supports a wide range of important habitats, many of which are designated as SACs, SSSIs and / or nature reserves.

Dŵr Cymru awarded match-funding for the project scoping study. Following the completion of the scoping study, the North Wales Wildlife Trust successfully secured funding from WREN to conduct phase 1 of the Living Landscape project, to which Dŵr Cymru awarded match-funding.

The purpose of the Alun and Chwiler Living Landscape project is to increase connectivity between the different habitats located along the river corridors, and within the valleys. By restoring, recreating and reconnecting important habitats, improvements will also be made to; the essential ecosystem services that these habitats provide, water quality, and delivery of the WFD objectives.
